Local musicians aim to highlight ridiculousness in nation's political process

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — This week's Difference Maker puts the spotlight on Sousaphones Against Hate, which plays a different tune to try to make the world a less hateful place.

“The first event we decided to play was when Donald Trump came to Bolingbrook,” said Steven Duncan.

Duncan is the founder and leader of Sousaphones Against Hate, which began in 2016. He described the ensemble as “sort of a musical protest group.”

Since its inception, the group has been busy blasting their sousaphones at political events, parades, rallies by hate groups — just about any place they think there's a bit too much hate.

“We want to add humor to the process but also highlight the ridiculousness and the silliness that seems to be happening in the political process, not to mention the weirdness,” he said.

Duncan said the group features about a dozen musicians on call to drown out the hate, playing “funny tunes and funny instruments.”
