CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) has opened an investigation after Chicago police shot and wounded a man at a business in the city's Brighton Park neighborhood early Saturday morning.

Police responded to a call of an assault and a person with a gun just after 12 a.m. on South Kedzie Avenue near West 39th Street.

A statement from police said responding officers came across a male offender who produced a firearm. They tried to disarm him, and officials said the man fired his gun.

The statement doesn’t say he fired at the officers; it does say an officer returned fire and wounded the man.

Officers provided first aid, according to the statement. The man was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

Police said a gun was recovered at the scene.

I love how they make it seem like someone has to shoot at you to defend yourself.... it's illegal to brandish a weapon... and only take a second to shoot something sounds like he was a threat to me 🤷‍♂️
