    Man denied pretrial release, accused of trying to rob, shoot off-duty Cook County Sheriff's deputy

    CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Criminal charges have been filed in an alleged robbery attempt in the West Loop early Sunday that turned into an exchange of gunfire.

    Thirty-two-year-old Desmond White, according to Chicago Police, a ttempted to rob a man on Morgan near Lake Street. It happened at about 1:40 a.m.

    The man who was allegedly being robbed is a Cook County Sheriff’s correctional officer. He was walking on a sidewalk.

    Police said White pulled up in an SUV and demanded the man’s watch. White is alleged to have fired shots at the man and missed. The off-duty deputy returned fire.

    White got a ride to a hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound. He was denied pretrial release.

    He’s charged with attempted murder, attempted armed robbery and being an armed habitual criminal.
