License renewal at the grocery store? Illinois unveils 'Fast Lane DMV' kiosks

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Illinois Secretary of State's Office is rolling out “Fast Lane DMVs” across the state to save state residents a trip to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

“It's as easy as stop, shop, scan, renew, and it all takes about two minutes,” said Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias.

Giannoulias was on hand to unveil the DMV Kiosk Pilot Program, which will allow Illinoisans to access DMV services while buying their groceries.

“We have partnered with our great friends at Mariano's, Jewel-Osco, Meijer, and Kroger to place 15 fast lane kiosks in communities around the state,” Giannoulias said. “Our goal, ultimately, is to get to 150 kiosks throughout the state of Illinois.”

At the kiosks, he says people will be able to renew their driver's license and state ID or purchase a vehicle sticker.

“The kiosks serve as an alternative resource for people who don't have internet access or who aren't comfortable with digital services,” he said.

There will be a $4.95 fee per transaction, Giannoulias said. The Secretary of State's office plans to add even more services to the kiosks as the program expands.
