(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Northwestern University is suing one of the makers of the COVID-19 vaccines.

The vaccine that's helped protect millions of people worldwide from the COVID-19 virus and its variants would not have been possible without research done in the Chicago area at Northwestern University.

Attorneys for Northwestern made this claim in a lawsuit against Moderna in federal court in Delaware this week.

The lawsuit claims the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Moderna relied on discoveries made by three researchers at Northwestern's International Institute for Nano-technology.

The lawsuit also claims Moderna would not have been able to develop the vaccine as quickly without tech from Northwestern.

British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline filed a similar lawsuit against Moderna this week, accusing it of violating GSK patent rights and patent rights to develop vaccines for COVID and RSV.

The school isn't saying what it's seeking in damages, but says it's not trying to stop use of the Moderna vaccine.

WBBM has reached out to Northwestern for comment, but has not heard back yet.
