Orchard Park, N.Y. (WBEN) - The New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation is looking into the circumstances surrounding the shooting death of a man by Orchard Park Police this past Friday.

Officers were called to a home on Hawthorne Avenue on Friday evening, where officials say they encountered a man who was holding a knife. The officers instructed the man to drop the weapon, but instead, they say he moved toward them with the knife. This prompted the officers to discharge their firearms.

The man died at the hospital. Police say a knife was recovered at the scene.

Both officers who initially responded to the scene were placed on administrative leave.

Under New York State law, the Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigations is tasked with reviewing all cases where a police officer may have caused a person’s death.
