Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Police continue to express concerns over drunk driving incidents after years of getting the message out against it. One such deadly example came over Labor Day weekend.

Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia tells WBEN that 26-year-old Grant Beyer was driving the wrong way on the Kensington Expressway on Sunday when he struck a car head-on. He later died at Erie County Medical Center.

"It appears, at this point, that alcohol may have played a role in the accident. We're still investigating, and there's a lot of work to be done," said Gramaglia, who notes it will take months for toxicology results to confirm.

Gramaglia says anti-drunk driving efforts have been going on for decades, but not everyone is getting the message.

"I just don't know how you're going to continue to get that message out where it actually sinks in," Gramaglia said.

Police agencies across the country are making DWI arrests and investigating DWI accidents.

"The messaging has been going out for decades with stop DWI programs," Gramaglia said.

Another DWI incident over the weekend happened in West Seneca, allegedly involving Starpoint Schools Superintendent Sean Croft.

One thing that's been helping is ridesharing.

"Ride share has really changed the game, as far as safety for those that are going to go out and involve alcohol in their activities. The ease of getting a ride share, the quickness of it. So I don't know how you get the message out any further," Gramaglia said.
