Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Niagara County Clerk Joe Jasztremski says he's been made aware of an alert that someone is using text messages to try and scam E-ZPass users.

According to Jastrzemski, the scam has been going after customers of tolling agencies across the country that persuades them to enter personal and/or financial information on a phony website. It appears E-ZPass customers are now the latest targets.

"This is like so many other scams where the goal is to try to acquire as much of your personal information as possible," said Jastrzemski in an interview with WBEN. "The text message that is sent out looks official and has fooled many people."

Jastrzemski says that's not the only way scammers are trying to get to you.

"We're told that they're also reaching out via email, saying you have to pay an E-ZPass fine. If you don't, your license will be suspended," Jasztremski said.

If you get such a notice, you can contact his office or law enforcement.

"We want to make sure they don't click on that, and they don't fall for this scam that's going on out there," Jastrezmski said.
