Cheektowaga Police investigating possible homicide

Cheektowaga, N.Y. (WBEN) - The Cheektowaga Police Department is investigating a possible homicide that happened Monday morning.

Shortly before 11:30 a.m. ET, Cheektowaga Police detectives received information of an alleged homicide that occurred at 432 Cayuga Road. Cpt. Jeffery Schmidt says in an abundance of caution, the roadway in front of the house was closed and a perimeter was set up around the area until police could confirm there was no immediate danger to the public.

"The most important thing from our perspective, is just that when these things happen, these investigations, when they're in the early stages, we're collecting information too. Our primary goal is always community safety. That Trumps a lot of other things," Schmidt stated in an interview with WBEN. "As we start to move our investigation forward, if we get to a point where we believe the community may be a danger, we will communicate that."

Patrol officers located a deceased person alone inside the home. Cheektowaga Police detectives are in the process of identifying the victim and notifying the family.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of death. More information will be released as it becomes available.
