Did You Know There is a Hot Dog Festival in Kentucky?
If you ask anyone from Harlan County, hot dogs are as Kentucky as bourbon, bluegrass and horses. The Southeastern part of the state is known for coal country, gorgeous Appalachian mountain trails and is rich with American history. It's also home to some pretty awesome festivals like PossumFest and the Dog Days of Summer Annual Hot Dog Festival. I figured with it being National Hot Dog Day, if there are any weiner lovers in Kentucky who may want to celebrate on a larger scale, you can mark your calendars for a road trip.
Popular ‘Summer Fest’ Returns to Owensboro, KY with Fun Changes
Last year, My Sister's Keeper, Owensboro's newest emergency shelter for women and children, held its inaugural Summer Fest fundraiser at The Cottage, just outside the city limits. Summer Fest 2023 was an all day food and music festival that raised money for the shelter, which opened earlier this year at 2820 4th Street. This year, the hours of Summer Fest have been scaled back, but the event is still going to be action-packed- from start to finish- with food, fun and entertainment.
Indiana DNR Accepting Applications for Shooting Range Grants
The DNR Shooting Range Grant Program is accepting applications for the development of rifle, handgun, shotgun firing, and archery opportunities for public use. While growing up in southern Indiana, I always looked forward to trips to the shooting range. I started out at just seven years old with a simple single shot .22 rifle, before making my way up to a 12-gauge shotgun around the age of 11. Eventually, I was given the opportunity to fire a few different handguns. The hobby has stuck with me through the years, and I've since become fascinated with old military surplus rifles. I still make regular trips to the shooting range today.

Anheuser-Busch Donates Drinking Water to Indiana Fire Department
An effort to get more cans of emergency drinking water to local fire departments is underway, thanks to Anheuser-Busch and the National Volunteer Fire Council. Emergency preparedness is something we hear a lot about, particularly around September during National Preparedness Month. The public service announcements and alerts used to roll right over my head, but now, as a married man with a house and several animals, it's something I keep in mind a little more these days. Disasters can happen at any time, as was clearly seen earlier this week when multiple weather hazards hit the area. If you ask me, preparing for disaster is not only an individual responsibility but also a community responsibility.

If you're heading toward the Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge/Sevierville area, as countless millions have done, and you make the wrong left turn, you might end up in Tennessee's oldest town. But don't make that U-turn too fast, because you won't regret it. Located on U.S. 321 just this side of Johnson City...

Evansville Retailer to Close After 60 Years in Business
Paul’s Menswear launched a retirement sale last month, with plans to close doors after over 60 years on the west side of Evansville. While I never personally purchased a suit from Paul’s Menswear, I can certainly appreciate the time that goes into getting a suit or pants tailored. I purchased my first suit in December 2019 when I started going on job interviews after college. Buying my first suit around that time was, to me, a symbol of accomplishment, and it was a great experience. I would imagine many in the Evansville area have similar stories about shopping at Paul’s Menswear.

While some cities now have one less pizza option, others can celebrate one of their favorites that will be sticking around for a little longer. It's been a struggle for several recognizable chain restaurants in 2024. And the list keeps growing. So far, the year has brought us reports of...
27 of the Nation’s 35 Largest High School Gyms Are in Indiana
May my tongue turn into a carrot stick if what I'm about to write, in any way, leads you to believe that I am besmirching Kentucky's long and storied basketball tradition. Okay? Okay. End of disclaimer. (I'm a Kentuckian, by the way.) Honestly, though, KENTUCKY'S hoops tradition is mostly about...

Ingrid Andress has admitted she was intoxicated during her rocky performance of the national anthem at the 2024 MLB Home Run Derby on Monday night on Monday night (July 15.) Andress' off-key performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner" went viral this week, with some putting the moment up there with the worst national anthem performances of all time.
Eminem Sampled Jelly Roll’s ‘Save Me’ On New Album
It seems like all music genres are dipping their toes in country music these days including a big surprise: Eminem. Just recently, the legendary rapper sampled Jelly Roll's hit single "Save Me" on the last track of his new album The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce). Jelly Roll was unsurprisingly stunned that his "childhood hero" used his chorus. "I can’t believe I’m on Eminem’s album," wrote the "Halfway to Hell" singer on X (formerly Twitter) following the new release.
Pain at the Pump: Gas Prices On The Rise in Western Kentucky
Last week, the remnants of Hurricane Beryl plowed through western Kentucky and brought torrential downpours and tornado warnings to the area. Before it got to Kentucky, Beryl tore through the coast of Texas. That, combined with an incredibly busy 4th of July travel season and the fact that oil prices are still hovering over $80 per barrel, lead to a slight increase in the price of gas in our area. I suppose it's safe to say we're still seeing some of the 'remnants' of Hurricane Beryl. We felt his winds and rains as they passed through. We're still feeling him a bit at the pump.
