DAVIS, W.Va. (WBOY) — Hundreds of Skiers from across West Virginia battled against winter weather and each other during the 64th Governor’s Cup Ski Race held over the weekend.

205 skiers, a record number for the event, competed at Timberline Mountain in a slalom time trial for more than $15,000 in prizes. Slalom is a type of skiing where athletes zig-zag between obstacles to get the fastest time.

Men and women were divided into nine different age groups; the person with the fastest time in each group was awarded a brand new set of skis, with runner-ups being awarded other ski apparel like goggles and equipment bags.

David Cooper, an organizer for the race, said the Governor’s Cup is one of the longest-running ski races in the entire east coast.

“We’ve got people who’ve been at the race for over 30 years now in those upper categories and they’re still coming back,” Cooper said.

A winter storm warning was in effect during the event on Sunday, but that didn’t keep skiers away from a chance to use the slopes before spring finally arrives.
