WEST UNION, W.Va. (WBOY) — To commemorate the completion of its new courthouse annex building, the Doddridge County Commission held an open house so the public could take a look around.

The new 32,000-square-foot annex building will house the following departments in Doddridge County:

    • Sheriff’s Department
    • County Clerk
    • Assessor and Tax Office
    • County Commission
    • Ambulance Authority
    • Economic Development Authority
    • Public Service Department
    • Solid Waste Authority

Residents who attended the open house were able to explore the new facility and see the fruits of the commission’s years of planning .

“We had COVID to deal with, we couldn’t get things in here when we needed them. And it always happens at the wrong time. You had the ground open up ready for something and they can’t buy, we can’t get a certain supply that we need. So, the relief of finally getting this thing under roof and getting our license to put people in it is wonderful,” Doddridge County Commissioner Shawn Glaspell said.

Architectural and engineering designs for the building were provided by the Thrasher Group and Fairchange Construction Company built it.

“And the important part of it was really being sensitive to the historic nature of the courthouse, but not overpowering it, also being sensitive to the residential neighborhood that surrounds this area while still creating a building that would accommodate all their needs,” Thrasher Group Architect and Project Manager Matthew Breakey said.

The Thrasher Group said that it was able to use the topography of the location to create a three-story building that looks like a two-story complex from the front side which blends it into the neighborhood.
