    Randolph County student is West Virginia’s finalist in Google Doodle contest

    HARMAN, W.Va. (WBOY) — A student from Harman School in Randolph County has been selected as the West Virginia winner of this year’s Google Doodle contest.

    Colleena Lewis is a finalist in the Grades 8 and 9 age group with her clay Google sculpture that was inspired by her desire to become a cardiothoracic surgeon. Her piece, titled “Cardiothoracic surgeon clay,” was inspired by the prompt “My wish for the next 25 years…”

    My wish for the next 25 years is to graduate medical school, become a cardiothoracic surgeon, and, sometime in between, get married and have kids.

    Lewis was one of 55 state and territory winners selected among tens of thousands of submissions, according to a press release.

    Now, she needs votes in the national Google Doodle contest where five winners will be selected; from those five, one winner will be selected and receive $55,000 scholarship and a $50,000 technology package for their school or a nonprofit organization of their choice.

    “Young artists shared a range of things they wished for in the next 25 years including safer communities, technological breakthroughs, a cleaner planet, and greater unity among people,” Doodle Product Marketing Manager Selly Sallah said in the release. “Given the challenging nature of the past few years, we were really inspired to see the many ways students have been facing the opportunities and challenges that the future brings.”

    Lewis’ accomplishment was celebrated locally with a celebration in Harman Wednesday morning.
