BUCKHANNON, W.Va. (WBOY) — Beans were snapped and cooked at The Great Green Bean Cook-off in Jawbone Park on Friday as part of the city-wide Festival Friday event.

Participants were encouraged to prepare and bring their green bean dish in a crock-pot or other warming device, setup along the Madison Street side of the park and to bring enough to offer samples to the public after judging took place. They were also asked to bring a copy of their recipe to share with the nutritional values and estimated cost for the preparation of their green bean dish for judging purposes.

“Everything we gather, beans, the entry for the stroll, the money that we collect, which is not a lot all goes to The Parrish House to support their activities,” said Dr. Joseph Reed, the Organizer of The Great Green Bean Cook-off event.

“I spent 50 plus years here as a physician delivering babies and taking care of kids and have been treated well here, I’ve enjoyed living here, and I’ve enjoyed being able to help other people wherever the opportunity is presented.”

Buck Edwards took home the grand prize and all the bragging rights from the best green bean dish.

On Saturday, the annual Green Bean Stroll will take place at the Buckhannon River Walk for the cost of a fresh bag of green beans or the low cost of $5. Participants can walk, run, bicycle, or skate along for a mile. All proceeds will benefit The Parish House.
