11 West Virginia high school football teams being reclassified by WVSSAC

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WBOY) — Appeals by 11 West Virginia schools have been upheld, meaning that they will all change classes for the 2024 football season.

According to a release from the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC), the decision was made by the Review Board and will only be applied to football during the 2024-2025 academic year.

Among the schools impacted by the decision are five would-have-been-AAAA schools that will now compete in AAA class instead. The WVSSAC approved the creation of the AAAA class in December of last year .

A full list of teams that will be reclassified because of the decision is as follows:

• Preston High School changes from AAAA to AAA
• John Marshall High School changes from AAAA to AAA
• St. Albans High School changes from AAAA to AAA
• Oak Hill High School changes from AAAA to AAA
• Spring Valley changes from AAAA to AAA
• Frankfort High School changes from AAA to AA
• Wayne High School changes from AAA to AA
• Sissonville High School changes from AAA to AA
• Petersburg High School changes from AA to A
• St. Marys High School changes from AA to A
• Tyler Consolidated High School changes from AA to A

Classes are based 80% on a school’s number of students, but location and economics also have some impact. Basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball and cheer teams will still compete in the class they were assigned last year .
