WESTON, W.Va. (WBOY) — A man has been charged after troopers found cocaine and methamphetamine during a traffic stop in Lewis County.

On Aug. 14, troopers with the Lewis County detachment of the West Virginia State Police were assisting Lewis County deputies with a traffic stop on West 2nd Street in Weston for “suspicious that the driver and passenger of the vehicle were involved in illegal activities,” according to a criminal complaint.

The driver, identified as Leon Starkey, 68, of Glenville, and the passenger were removed from the vehicle so that a K-9 unit could perform a free air sniff in the area, which resulted in a positive indication for the presence of narcotics, troopers said.

When troopers attempted to search Starkey, he “resisted and obstructed,” so troopers “placed [him] into handcuffs”; Starkey was in possession of a bag that field tested positive for cocaine, according to the complaint.

While searching the vehicle, troopers located “a large quantity” of methamphetamine, deputies said.
