CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WBOY) — Revenue and tax officials in West Virginia have officially certified an income tax reduction for the second year in a row.

According to a press release from Gov. Jim Justice’s (R) office, the change will be a 4% reduction starting on Jan. 1, 2025. Although the cut was already scheduled to take place after Justice announced it back in July , it has now been officially certified and filed by Revenue Secretary Larry Pack, State Auditor JB McCuskey (R) and the State Tax Division.

A similar tax break went into effect last year after the passage of House Bill 2526, which was deemed the largest tax break in state history , and Gov. Justice isn’t stopping there. He has said multiple times that the state is working toward eliminating the state income tax completely and has already requested that the West Virginia Legislature cut the income tax by an additional 5% during the upcoming special session.

What’s next for West Virginia’s Joe Manchin?

“As the state succeeds, the people deserve to keep more of their money,” Pack said in the release. “This personal income tax trigger was put into place so as West Virginia does well economically, the people receive their share of that success. We’re creating a better environment for economic growth and opportunities across the state. The hardworking people of West Virginia truly deserve it. It is certainly a proud moment for our state, and we’re really excited about the bright future ahead.”

West Virginia’s current tax rates are between 2.36% and 5.12, depending on income.
