Man charged after allegedly crushing dog’s head during altercation in Philippi

PHILIPPI, W.Va. (WBOY) — A man is facing charges after allegedly killing a Chihuahua with his bare hands in Philippi.

On Aug. 15, officers with the Philippi Police Department responded to an altercation at the Kelly Terrace Apartments, according to a criminal complaint.

Officers learned “that a dog was killed in the altercation,” and spoke with a person “who was clearly distressed standing outside the apartment; she said that Colton Day, 20, of Buckhannon, “killed the dog,” officers said.

She also said that Day “was locked out on the porch” and that “there was blood all over the house,” the complaint said.

When officers spoke with Day on the porch, they noted that there was “blood covering his arms,” “blood on the railing” and “on the porch and blood covering the white vehicle below.” Officers said Day “appeared highly intoxicated and had slurred speech,” and that he “stated that he killed the dog with his [bare] hands” and hit the dog multiple times.

A dead “Chihuahua with its head crushed” was found “in the woods just behind the porch as if it was thrown,” according to the complaint.

Day has been charged with animal cruelty. He is being held in Tygart Valley Regional Jail on $60,000 bond.
