CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission is adjusting the classifications for more schools for the 2024 football season.

According to the WVSSAC, the Review Board initially reversed the WVSSAC Board of Diectors’ reclassifications of 11 schools, and now 11 more have been reclassified.

The initial 11 schools included Frankfort, John Marshall, Oak Hil, Petersburg, Preston, Sissonville, Spring Valley, St. Albans, St. Marys, Tyler Consolidated and Wayne. The updated list now includes Buckhannon Upshur, Capital, Chapmanville, Independence, Lincoln, Nicholas County, Pikeview, Ritchie, Riverside, South Charleston, and Summers County.

According to the WVSSAC, the readjustments will mean:

    • Schools moving from AAAA to AAA – Buckhannon Upshur, Capital, John Marshall, Oak Hill, Preston, Riverside, St. Albans, Spring Valley and South Charleston
    • Schools moving from AAA to AA – Chapmanville, Frankfort, Independence, Lincoln, Nicholas County, Pikeview, Sissonville and Wayne.
    • Schools moving from AA to A – Petersburg, Ritchie, St. Marys, Summers County and Tyler Consolidated.

The WVSSAC says they received the Review Board’s opinion reversing the Board of Directors’ reclassifications of those schools in football for the 2024-2025 academic year. The reclassifications originally came following a pilot period of four classifications – AAAA, AAA, AA and A – for basketball. The WVSSAC says its Board of Control then voted 117-16 to extend the four classifications expansion to additional sports.

This ruling just stands for this football season. It will be reviewed in the spring.

what's the point of having 4a in football? with the recent teams dropping down to 3a, that only makes 12 schools in 4a. Automatic bids in the tournament.
