MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) — West Virginia University will give anything to beat Penn State, including blood, sweat and tears—sometimes literally—and all Mountaineer fans can help in a new kind of faceoff.

The staff councils of the two schools have decided “it’s time for blood” by declaring a blood drive competition ahead of the rivalry game and WVU home football opener on Aug. 31.

Each school will host a blood drive on their campus the week of the game, and whichever collects the most donations will already be one victory ahead at kickoff. The winner will be announced at the game.

The WVU blood drive will be on Friday, Aug. 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the WVU Mountainlair Ballroom. Students, staff community members and anyone else who wants to donate can sign up for an appointment online here .

As if a friendly competition wasn’t enough motivation, the American Red Cross is also offering a $20 Amazon gift card to anyone who donates blood during the month of August.
