BUCKHANNON, W.Va. (WBOY) — The Buckhannon detachment of the West Virginia State Police has scheduled a sobriety checkpoint for Saturday evening.

According to a press release, the checkpoint will be held from 6 p.m. to midnight on Saturday, Aug. 24. It will be located on N Locust Street (W.Va. 20) just south of the U.S. 33 overpass, according to the release, which is the main route into downtown Buckhannon from the highway near Sheetz and the Donut Spot.

The checkpoint is an effort by troopers and the Commission on Drunk Driving Prevention to prevent and deter impaired drivers.

Drivers who are heading into Buckhannon can avoid the checkpoint by taking the Old Weston Road exit off of U.S. 33 instead of the main Buckhannon/Philippi exit.

The release said that if the location becomes unavailable or unsafe, the checkpoint could be moved to a different location, although it did not specify where that secondary location would be.

The checkpoint coincides with “Saturation Saturday,” an event by the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) that calls for increased patrols and DUI checkpoints during the the week leading up to Labor Day.
