MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) — A man who was put in custody for shoplifting a chicken from Walmart was charged after officers allegedly found drugs in his wallet.

On Aug. 18, officers with the Morgantown Police Department were dispatched to Walmart on Retail Circle Drive in reference to a call of a shoplifting, according to a criminal complaint.

While officers were en route, the communications center informed them that two people were “in custody with loss prevention being uncooperative”; those two individuals then “ran out of the store” and got into a vehicle to leave the scene, officers said.

When officers arrived, they located the vehicle entering Grafton Road and performed a traffic stop, during which time they made contact with three individuals, one of whom was identified as Cory Ball, 30, of Morgantown, according to the complaint.

In a Mirandized interview, Ball told officers that “he selected chicken from the store” and then would “eat it while in the store and left the package on the shelf,” which resulted in officers placing Ball into custody for shoplifting, officers said.

During the arrest, officers searched Ball and located a “wallet-style accessory” in his pocket which contained small bags of a substance which Ball claimed was fentanyl; he also claimed “he does about a brick of fentanyl a day,” according to the complaint.

Also on Ball’s person, officers found a substance which “had the appearance of digital chips” which Ball said were “stamp baggies,” and a green container which held a small bag of a substance testing positive for heroin and a piece of aluminum foil containing a substance testing positive for fentanyl, officers said.

Ball has been charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. He is being held in North Central Regional Jail on $10,000 bond.
