MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) — Although Monongalia County went back to school for the year on Tuesday , due to water damage in their building, 6th graders at Suncrest Middle School will return on Wednesday instead, and not to their usual classroom.

The annex building at Suncrest Middle School suffered water damage over the summer, so the 6th grade class will be bussed to a temporary classroom in the WVU Innovation Center for the first few months of the 2024-20 school year.

Monongalia County Schools first announced the temporary classroom in a letter on Aug. 7 . The classroom is located about one mile from the middle school in the WVU Innovation Corporation Building, which used to be the Mylan pharmaceuticals plant . According to an informational flyer from the school , all subjects, including electives like band, choir and art, will be offered at the WVU Innovation building.

Bus routes and parent drop-off and pick-up will not change, and a separate bus will take 6th graders to and from the middle school and the temporary classroom. For situations like late drop-off or early pick-up, the school says “there will be a system in place.”

Once the renovation of the annex building is complete, 6th grade classes will return to Suncrest Middle School. The project is expected to take about three months, according to the school’s flyer.

Parents and guardians already had the chance to meet with the school principal about concerns during informational meetings on Aug. 12, and answers to other frequent questions are available here .
