WESTON, W.Va. (WBOY) — After finishing above .500 in 2023, the Lewis County Minutemen are looking to continue that success in 2024 with the hopes of impressing their passionate fanbase.

“We’re going to be the biggest show on Friday night in Lewis county, anywhere we go too. We travel well, they support our team, they’re going to support everything that happens in Lewis County,” Head Coach Dusty Cogar said.

After having a winning season in 2023, it makes it even more fun for the community to rally behind them, but the Minutemen are going to have to work extra hard this season to have those same results.

“We echo the blue-collar mentality of coming out and getting between the white lines and kind of letting us play and letting us having a little fun. Again, a much younger group, so it’s going to take time for that to evolve,” Cogar said.

“We’re a super young team, lost a lot of seniors. It’s really important for us four seniors that we have now to teach the young guys how to play the game,” Owen Acord said.

Players have said that the team’s goal right now is just to get better every day.

“Hopefully we just improve, practice hard and work harder,” Maddox Gillespie said.

“The young guys, they listen. If you have something to tell them, if you have some improvements they need to make, they will listen to you. They won’t shrug you off. So, they do an amazing job. They give it their all every play so that’s really amazing and that’s all we need,” Owen Acord said.

One position that has not been solidified quite yet is the quarterback, and it will all come down to who is the most comfortable. As of right now, both candidates are catching on fast.

“They pick up things pretty quick and I think we can even throw that back to last year’s senior group of being pretty good leaders there and being able to get into games where these guys can get some reps,” Dusty Cogar said.

The Minutemen will travel to Fairmont Senior for their first game of the season on Aug. 30.
