CANONSBURG, Pa. (WBOY) — Two coal production companies with mining operations in West Virginia are merging to form a new company.

Arch Resources, Inc. and CONSOL Energy Inc. announced on Wednesday that they have entered a definitive agreement to merge all their stock to create Core Natural Resources, which they said in a press release will be “leading producer and exporter of high-quality, low-cost coals.”

Arch’s website says it operates four metallurgical coal mining complexes in West Virginia, including the Leer Mine in Taylor County and the Leer South Mine in Barbour County, as well as Colorado and Wyoming.

CONSOL operates three mining complexes in the region, including one in Southern West Virginia and one that is partially in West Virginia’s Northern Panhandle, according to its website .

After combined, the new Core Natural Resources will own and operate a total of 11 mines across the country. The release said that the merger will expand the companies’ export capabilities, and save on costs.

The merger has been passed unanimously by both companies, according to the release, and is expected to close by the end of the first quarter of 2025.

Only large companies can afford the mineral rights to thousands of acres and they hire Independents to face up for future larger mining operations or mine coal that has very short life span and then they punch more holes in the next holler.
