MILL CREEK, W.Va. (WBOY) — You won’t find a better backdrop for high school football in West Virginia than the one at Tygarts Valley High School, and the Bulldogs are practicing to make the product on the field look as good as the one behind them.

“We’re having the little successes right now,” said first-year Head Coach CJ Clarkson. “We were talking just a little bit ago about having numbers out for the first time and having people around. That attracts a little bit of confidence, and we can come out here and compete with each other, have a good time. We’re competing every day, practicing which is allowing us to build the confidence.”

It’s the first season with Clarkson at the helm, and so far, the players have taken a liking to their new head coach.

“CJ seems pretty smart, he seems like he knows football, and he’s got a good offense going,” said junior Austin Gear.

A 3-7 campaign in 2023 leaves room for improvement, and after a stellar freshman season, sophomore Adam Woods is ready to help lead the Bulldogs into battle.

Lincoln football hopes younger members will step up in 2024

“I try to set a great example for the young guys,” said Woods. “We got a couple young guys who have a lot of potential if they really put the work into it. Just trying to be another leader for this year.”

However, above all else, there’s one idea that Head Coach Clarkson is focusing on throughout the season.

“I’m just trying to get it through their heads to be kids and enjoy this one day at a time,” Clarkson said. “That’s really what we’re trying to do. As we go further on and on, I can see some maturity levels changing. So, I can definitely see the change for the better coming. We’re gonna have a bright future as we go here.”

Tygarts Valley kicks off the 2024 season on Aug. 30 at Valley.
