SHINNSTON, W.Va. (WBOY) — While in office, State Treasurer Riley Moore has encouraged West Virginians to check and see if they’re the owners of unclaimed property in the state. The City of Shinnston is one of those owners and received a check from Treasurer Moore on Thursday.

Unclaimed property are financial assets that have gone dormant and have been turned over to the state. The West Virginia State Treasurer’s Office then does its best to return that unclaimed property to its rightful owner.

During this fiscal year, the State Treasurer’s office has returned $28 million in unclaimed property, and the City of Shinnston received a check for $18,009.25 of that on Thursday.

In an interview with 12 News, Moore credited the online database that his office set up as well as digital advertising for the growth in returned unclaimed property.

City of Shinnston City Manager Tori Drainer said she found out the city had unclaimed property by looking through the State Treasurer’s Office’s website . She said that the city plans to discuss how to use the $18,000 to further develop the city in a future city council meeting.
