FAIRVIEW, W.Va. (WBOY) — Around 100 shooters from as far away as Florida and Minnesota came out to Fairview on Friday as the 1,000 Yard National Shoot competition kicked off at the Harry Jones Memorial Range.

Friday was the first day as well as the day of the tactical gun shoot. During the shoot, competitors had 10 minutes to get off five shots and we were then judged by how close their shots were to the bullseye and how close their furthest shots were grouped to each other.

Following Friday’s competition will be the light gun shoot on Saturday and the heavy gun shoot on Sunday. The prize for the best shooter at the end of the weekend is $750.

Harry Jones Memorial Range President Gary Munson said that the range first began operations in the mid-90s with the first competition being held in 2008. The range is a Freedom Benchrest Association-affiliated shooting club.

The Harry Jones Memorial Range is open to new members, and Munson said that safety is the top priority at Harry Jones. “Harry Jones’s motto is ‘we like to catch more flies with honey than we do vinegar, but when it comes to safety, we’re all vinegar,’” Munson said.

If you’re interested in watching or entering the shooting competition, it will start at 9 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
