ROANOKE, W.Va. (WBOY) — With West Virginia currently in a drought , many lakes and resorts around the state are struggling to provide recreational water activities to the public.

Stonewall Resort State Park is one location being affected by the drought. Currently, the lake is approximately 6 feet below the summer pool and 1 foot below the winter pool. With the lake losing up to 1 inch daily, Stonewall Resort State Park is suggesting boaters stay in the main river channel and only use the center boat ramp as the other two have been closed.

“We have the middle ramp which is a bit longer. It still open so you can still get in and out, you just have to be cautious as you’re doing it. Watch what you’re doing and pay attention. It’s the same thing for the whole lake right now. Just, cation is the big word for right now. We just cross our fingers and hope we can hold on as long as we can. We need rain and we need it bad,” said Alan Griffith, Stonewall Resort Marina Manager.

West Virginia extends drought State of Emergency

Stonewall will continue to aggressively monitor the lake levels and weather. Officials are trying to keep the marina open for the season and plan to communicate weekly on the lake and marina conditions.

There is a chance of rain in the area starting on Wednesday .

Other marinas in the area, including the one at Tygart Lake, had to close early this year due to low water levels .
