MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) — Following the death of longtime WVU Band Director Don Wilcox earlier this year, the “Pride of West Virginia” Mountaineer Marching Band will be adding a small detail to their uniforms in his honor.

WVU Bands announced on social media Tuesday that for the 2024 season, members of the band will wear small black pins adorned with the letters “DW” on their uniforms.

Wilcox directed the band from 1971 to 1997 —the second-longest tenure in the band’s history, and played a large part in shaping where the band is today. Under Wilcox’s leadership, women were permitted to join and the band’s size more than tripled from 88 members to more than 325.

Wilcox is also known as being the director who led the band to win its first and only Sudler Trophy, which is the award presented to “the nation’s most outstanding collegiate marching band” each year.
