BEVERLY, W.Va. (WBOY) – Randolph County Sheriff Rob Elbon confirmed to 12 News on Thursday the town of Beverly’s Police Department has been disbanded.

The police department was started back up just three years ago in 2021 but recently only had one police officer on staff that covered a less than 10 mile area, according to Sheriff Elbon.

“At this time, they’re just not working anybody,” said Elbon, who added there were two officers working at the department at one point in time.

And according to the 2025 city budget for Beverly from the State Auditor’s office, the police department had the biggest expenditure in the town, at $170,000 dollars, almost 50% of the entire budget.

“We go ahead and take calls in the area anyway, so—and it was kind of a courtesy for us to let them take a call that was in the town limits if their policeman was—if he happened to be working that day. If he wasn’t working, we took the call anyway. So, it’s really not a whole lot of difference for us. Still call 911 and a sheriff’s office units will respond accordingly” said Sheriff Elbon.

Elbon said even when Beverly PD was in operation, the sheriff’s department would provide back up. Elbon added there is no concern for response time for residents of Beverly.

12 News’ request for comment from the town’s mayor and city council has not been returned for comment as of this publishing.
