BELINGTON, W.Va. (WBOY) — A woman has been charged after allegedly slapping a child on the face and neglecting to give medical care to another child with a head injury in Barbour County.

On Sept. 8, deputies with the Barbour County Sheriff’s Department responded to a call of a disturbance taking place at a residence on River Avenue in Belington, according to a criminal complaint.

When deputies arrived, they met with Jenny Peters, 28, of Belington, who said that she and another individual “had been in a verbal argument,” deputies said.

CPS workers then arrived on the scene due to there being “an active investigation against Peters”; and Peters told deputies that “she had ‘slapped'” one of the juveniles at the residence and that another juvenile “had a head injury and had been vomiting since an incident that took place approximately an hour before,” according to the complaint.

In that conversation, Peters told deputies that she was “not watching [the] children while they were supposed to be playing,” and that the reason the juvenile had gotten the head injury was because “another child had trapped [the juvenile] against the wall with a dresser,” deputies said.

After that, Peters “did not attempt to contact any form of medical personnel,” nor did she take the juvenile to the hospital; deputies observed “an open abrasion on [the juvenile’s] head approximately an inch long along with approximately 2-3 inches of swelling,” according to the complaint.

Peters has been charged with child abuse and child neglect. She is being held in Tygart Valley Regional Jail on $20,000 bond.
