CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WBOY) — After being announced back in January, the long-awaited Clarksburg Classical Academy officially cut the ribbon in the old Adamston Elementary/Victory High School building.

Principal Melissa Nelson told 12 News that the academy is a completely free, public charter school. “It’s new to the area,” said Nelson. “You know, we’re all about building the foundation and getting back into learning–the basics, teaching our kids how to think critically.”

Nelson said she feels that many students have lost the component of critical thinking skills in their learning, so Clarksburg Classical Academy has set a goal to try and teach students to think and build upon those foundational skills.

Nelson said that there was a lot of work that went into getting this building together including an extensive remodeling of the historic building.

Nelson said that when she stopped by the building on June 5, she said that the building was receiving new plumbing and a new HVAC system. The interior of the building was also given a fresh coat of paint.

Nelson feels that this new school is “a very good thing” for the community in Clarksburg, and helps offer an alternative option for parents. “A lot of our parents just wanted something different for their children and just wanted to have a say in their education,” she said.

“They’re just all in and that’s what’s important and that’s what I want in this building,” Nelson said. She added that it’s important to her for the parents of Clarksburg Classical Academy to feel like they’re a part of the community.

“I just want it to be a special place,” said Nelson. “I want the lives of the students, the teachers, the parents and the community to be impacted. I truly want this to be a community school where people want to be involved and I’m just blessed to be here.”

Classes officially began at Clarksburg Classical Academy on Wednesday, Sept. 4.
