Restaurant Road Trip: Whit’s Frozen Custard

JANE LEW, W.Va. (WBOY) — For this week’s Restaurant Road Trip, 12 News’ Makayla Schindler took a trip to Jane Lew, where you will not want to quit until you’ve tried Whit’s!

Whit’s Frozen Custard is a chain restaurant that can be found in only nine states in the US, with West Virginia being one, and Jane Lew being the only location in the state.

The idea of the shop came when Owner Christy Turner wanted to bring a location to West Virginia, which opened in March 2024. The corporation even came and trained all the employees on how to make the special treats.

With Turner also being a teacher, she has a number of high school employees at the shop. She is also a beekeeper and owns the shop located just next door to Whit’s.

The restaurant itself has something for everyone, offering vegan and gluten-free options as well as ones with no added sugar. Just like other ice cream stores, Whit’s serves things like:

• Sundaes
• Milkshakes
• Frozen custard cones
• Whitsers—which are similar to Blizzards from Dairy Queen
• Whitties—which are freshly-made ice cream sandwiches

On top of its various options, Whit’s also showcases a new flavor every week for its regular ice cream options as well as a new flavor every month for the Whitties and Whitsers.

This month’s Whittie flavor is Fluffer Nutter, which Makayla’s grandma—who tagged along for the ride—was definitely a fan of. The Schindler puppies were also treated to some frozen treats just for dogs because Whit’s offers something for everyone!

During her visit, Makayla tried a buckeye waffle and a cookie dough delight Whitser made with vanilla custard.

On top of its main options, Whit’s also sells things like cakes, quarts and pints of to-go frozen custards, Whit Sticks, Nutty Whits, chocolate-covered bananas and pre-made cones. All of the vanilla and chocolate custard is made fresh daily thanks to workers who show up two hours before opening time.
