MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) — For the 23rd anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, West Virginia University’s Army and Air Force ROTC held a 24-hour vigil to remember the day and pay tribute to those who have served.

ROTC cadets were outside the Downtown Library taking turns guarding and patrolling a memorial tree planted by WVU students one year after Sept. 11, 2001. The accompanying plaque reads, “We remember. The spirit of those lost on September 11, 2001, lives in each of us.”

To WVU’s ROTC, the vigil is an important event that they do every year. WVU senior and Physical Training Officer Kyle Butler was one of the ROTC cadets on guard.

“[The vigil] is an event to remember those who have served for our nation, our people, and to remember those who lost their lives.” ROTC Physical Training Officer Cadet Kyle Butler said. “Those who are not with us today, they served with impact, they did their duty—not just for their nation, but for their loved ones.”

The vigil will continue until Thursday, Sept. 12 at 8 a.m. with cadets changing guard every hour.
