    Longtime Alderson Broaddus basketball coach dies

    PHILIPPI, W.Va. (WBOY) — Greg Zimmerman, the man who coached Alderson Broaddus University men’s basketball for 18 years, has died.

    According to a social media post made by former Alderson Broaddus player and coach Stephen Dye, Zimmerman passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2024. His cause of death has not been confirmed as of Wednesday evening.

    Zimmerman began his tenure at Alderson Broaddus in 2001 after graduating from the university in 1978. During his tenure as coach, he held an all-time record of 390-156 (.714) and is known for being coach during the school’s streak of nine straight NCAA D-II Tournament appearances 2002–2010.

    Zimmerman was inducted into the Battler Hall of Fame in 2020 for his achievements as a coach with the Battlers.

    According to a social media post from Battlers Knob LLC —the organization that now owns the old Alderson Broaddus campus—a visitation and memorial service will be held 3–8 p.m. at Rex Pyles Arena in Philippi on Saturday, Sept. 14, as well as Sunday, Sept. 15 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
