LOST CREEK, W.Va. (WBOY) — Another north central West Virginia school has been given a grant to help fix its football field and has a chance to win a $2 million “football field technology makeover.”

South Harrison High School in Lost Creek was among the 50 winners announced on Sept. 13 to receive $5,000 through the T-Mobile Friday Night 5G Lights program. Montcalm High School in Rock, West Virginia was also on the list.

12 News featured South Harrison’s Gary Barnette field in late August , explaining that the field has seen better days after the effects of the ongoing drought in West Virginia and an armyworm infestation. Although playable for the football 2024 football season, the field was in rough condition, and South Harrison officials explained that with the proper funding, they hope to eventually convert the field into turf.

The following week, community business Three Sixty Solutions, LLC hydroseeded the field . South Harrison has not played a home football game yet this season, but a 12 News reporter stopped by the field on Monday and you can see in the following photos that the field is much greener. It is expected to look even better by Sept. 27, when the Hawks’ are scheduled to have their season home opener against Clay County.

Although the $5,000 T-Mobile grant won’t pay for a turf field, South Harrison is automatically entered for a chance to win one of 16 $25,000 prizes or the $2 million grand prize. Robert C. Byrd High School in Clarksburg also received $5,000 each and is eligible for the grand prize.

Two more groups of winners will be announced on Sept. 20 and Sept 27 before the finalists are announced in early October and the winner is revealed in early December.
