CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WBOY) — The West Virginia Department of Human Services (DoHS) announced a “promising reduction” in fatal overdoses Thursday afternoon, illustrating results in efforts to combat substance abuse.

A press release from the department states that data comparing the first quarter of 2023 to 2024 shows “a provisional 28% decrease in overdose deaths .” This matches national data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) which shows an 11% decrease in fatalities between April 2023 and 2024.

DoHS Deputy Secretary of Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders Christina Mullins is “cautiously optimistic” about the lower numbers.

“While much of our data is provisional, the numbers offer hope that our comprehensive strategies, including expanded access to treatment and prevention programs, are making an impact.”

The DoHS Office of Drug Control Policy along with the Governor’s Council on Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment has been working to fight substance abuse with methods such as naloxone distribution, expanded treatment programs and collaborations with local, state and federal partners. DoHS Office of Drug Control Policy Director Dr. Stephen Loyd credits the reduction to healthcare providers, emergency teams and community-based organizations.

“We know there is still much work to be done, but these early numbers are encouraging. Our focus now is on ensuring that this momentum continues throughout 2024 and beyond.”
