FAIRMONT, W.Va. (WBOY) — Fairmont State University (FSU) cut the ribbon on Middle College on Friday, an academic for foster youth that helps them earn their high school diploma and get a head start on a college degree.

Open to foster youth 16 years or older, Middle College will also provide a safe and stable place for students, who will live on the Fairmont State campus year-round. With more than 6,000 children in West Virginia’s foster care system , Emily Swain, the Dean of Middle College, said it was important for Fairmont State to get involved and try to help with one of the state’s biggest issues.

“Middle College is an opportunity for youth who are experiencing foster care to live on the campus of Fairmont State and receive their high school diploma and also receive their associate’s degree within a two-year period,” Swain said.

Middle College will also be providing foster youth with 24/7 mental health services through a partnership with KVC Health Systems , at no cost to students.
