Camp Mountaineer rifle range dedicated as WVU Rifle team’s practice facility

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) — Camp Mountaineer’s rifle range is the new outdoor home of the WVU Rifle Team, and a ribbon cutting was held on Tuesday to commemorate the occasion.

This new partnership was initiated by the Hayhurst Family and marks the beginning of what both entities hope to be a fruitful relationship for a long time to come.

“Rifle shooting, like any other target sport, is a big part of the scouting program on a national level. We are pleased to have the WVU Rifle Team here to be a part of that atmosphere for our scouts and we look forward to them ensure in teaching our scouts some of these values that come with that type of a sport,” said Scout Executive and CEO for Mountaineer Area Council of Scouting America Scott Hanson said.

WVU’s Rifle Team will have a greater advantage with this new range as there aren’t many outdoor rifle ranges throughout the United States, according to Hayhurst Family WVU Rifle Head Coach Jon Hammond.

“Shooting with the wind is something that’s hard to find a facility to practice with and if they have those skills it’s going to really benefit them in the future and that just gives a totally different dynamic to our training,” said Hammond.

The WVU Rifle Team held its first practice at the range just after the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
