BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. (WBOY) — United Hospital Center (UHC) officially expanded its care capabilities on Tuesday as it cut the ribbon on a brand new 18-room Intermediate Care Unit.

The new unit, which is located on the 7th floor, includes aesthetically enhanced private rooms with a patient-centered design that provides specialized care to patients who typically require longer stays.

According to a press release from UHC, the rooms in this $7.9 million unit will feature new cabinetry and recliners, individual climate control features, LED light fixtures, wood grain laminate floors, soundproof ceiling tiles and private bathrooms with walk-in showers and raised toilets.

“There can sometimes be an isolated feeling that you get when you’re in ICU, then when you come down to the Intermediate Care Unit, you have the possibility to be able to interact with the staff a little more, again the consultation rooms are there. It’s a little bit more family-friendly,” said President and CEO of WVU Medicine United Hospital Center, Dr. David Hess.

The new Intermediate Unit will officially open to patients on Tuesday, Oct. 1.
