    Webster County Schools dismissing early Thursday after death of a student

    UPPERGLADE, W.Va. (WBOY) — Webster County Schools will be dismissing early on Thursday so that students and staff can attend funeral services for a student who passed away on Monday.

    Webster County High School freshman Alyssa McCartney died at her home in Cowen on Monday, Sept. 23, according to her obituary . She was 15 years old.

    A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. at Morris Funeral Home in Cowen on Thursday, Sept. 26, with visitation starting at 1 p.m. Webster County Schools said on social media that Hacker Valley, Webster Springs and Glade elementary schools will dismiss at 11:00 a.m., and Webster County High School will dismiss at 11:30 a.m. so that staff and students can attend.

    There will also be a candlelight vigil in the community Thursday evening.

    Throughout the week, counseling services were available for students at Webster County High School . Although classes continued as usual, parents were allowed to remove students from school at their discretion, and Webster County’s homecoming festivities and spirit week were postponed to the week of Oct. 21-25.

    unfortunately this is a result of wchs allowing bullying in their schools. this has to stop. these are good parents and the children are amazing. it breaks my heart this is still allowed in this school. my life was he** there. as are many other students. this has to stop. beautiful soul was ended too soon due to picks of the community and school...
