KINGWOOD, W.Va. (WBOY) — The 82nd Buckwheat Festival kicked off in Kingwood this week, with festivities set to run through the weekend.

On Thursday, the arts and crafts buildings and livestock show were open. The festival’s signature buckwheat cakes were also on sale with a brand new recipe in the buckwheat waffle ice cream cone set to go on sale starting Friday at noon.

The festivities continued into Thursday night with the opening of the carnival, the Firemen’s Parade and performances on the Buckwheat Stage.

Festival General Chairman Evan Hardesty told 12 News that he’s been involved with the festival most of his life and that he wants to thank the festival’s volunteers for their effort in making the event possible.

“It’s a homecoming for a lot of folks. In fact, the motto for this year is open ‘the place where I belong,’” Hardesty said.

12 News also caught up with the King Buckwheat Connor Gibson, whose family has been farming for three generations and has a cattle on display at the festival. He told 12 News that he got to see a lot of the behind-the-scenes of the festival this year and he’s really excited to see how the event turns out.
