What were these West Virginia buildings before they were Spirit Halloween stores?

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WOWK) — Halloween is such a fun time: Costumes, candy, scary movies, and the inevitability of an abandoned store turning into a Spirit Halloween.

Spirit Halloween calls itself the “largest Halloween retailer in the country.” Customers can go in and get everything they need to have a great spooky season.

But it is also synonymous with failing businesses. Anytime an entity declares bankruptcy or has to close, a Photoshopped image of that business with a Spirit Halloween banner is placed over top of it.

West Virginia ranked 5th most festive Halloween state

There are seven Spirit Halloween locations across the Mountain State. Here is what they used to be:

    Barboursville

To start the list off, the Barboursville location is at the Huntington Mall. This used to be a Toys ‘R’ Us location. Many stores closed in the years after the entity filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2017.

    Beckley

The Beckley Spirit Halloween is at 32 By Pass Plaza Shopping Center. Using Google Street View, you can see the location has been a Spirit Halloween a few times. According to Yelp, it has also been a Notoriously Morbid store, a retailer that specializes in goth clothing and makeup.

    Bridgeport

The Bridgeport location is at 2720 Meadowbrook Road, which is located in the Meadowbrook Mall. According to Spirit Halloween’s website, this used to house an Elder Beerman.

    Charleston

The Spirit Halloween website says the Charleston location is in the back of Sky Zone, a trampoline park. But before it was Sky Zone, it was the Southridge Grand Prix Family Fun Center, a bumper car and arcade business.

    Martinsburg

Martinsburg residents can find their Spirit Halloween by going to 1287 Winchester Avenue. According to Spirit Halloween, this used to be a KMart. Fun fact: the last full-scale U.S. KMart is closing on Oct. 20, according to reporting by the Associated Press.

    Morgantown

The Morgantown location is right on the Monongahela River at 84 Green Bag Road. This used to be a sporting goods store known as Dunham’s Sports, according to Spirit Halloween.

    Parkersburg

To round out the list is Parkersburg at 4000 Murdoch Avenue. According to Yelp, this was a TJ Maxx before it was turned into a spooky wonderland. The TJ Maxx has since moved to a new location.
