ELKINS, W.Va. (WBOY) — Autumn is finally (officially) here! And what better way to ring in sweater weather and orange leaves than with the annual Mountain State Forest Festival in Elkins.

According to the event’s website, the 86th annual Mountain State Forest Festival is set to run from Saturday, Sept 28 through Sunday, Oct. 6. During that time, more than 75,000 people are expected to take to the streets of Elkins.

Notable events during this year’s festival include the lumberjack contest, live performances at the Rotary Amphitheater, the annual Queens Ball and the Grand Feature Parade, featuring WVU’s Mountaineer Marching Band.

The annual festival has been a long-standing autumn tradition in Elkins and is “dedicated to the preservation and conservation of the state’s natural resources,” the event’s website said.

Sawing logs is fun but the opposite of forest preservation. Gov. Justice opened all our state forests for logging what's left of the old growth trees. So that's gone now. Hardly forest "preservation."

I've been in the past, and there was one booth with a private river preservation group. Outside of that, it had nothing to do with forest preservation. Just the usual food booths and traveling craft booths and bouncy castles.
