BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. (WBOY) — Runners hit the pavement early Saturday morning to participate in the 2024 Jerry Dove Memorial 5k at the FBI Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Complex.

The 5k is held each year to honor the heroic actions of the late special agent Jerry Dove , a native West Virginian who died in a shootout near Miami in 1986. The 5K is also meant to remember all other law enforcement officers, firefighters and military personnel who have been killed while serving in the line of duty.

Tim Ferguson, Acting Assistant Director of CJIS Division discussed why he cares so much about the event.

“Having the ability to celebrate the life and legacy of a native son of West Virginia is very, very important to me, but overall, just to spend time with law enforcement officers and other family and friends of law enforcement officers is extremely important to me,” Ferguson said. “We have a very close community, and it’s important that we’re taking the time to stop and celebrate that together.”

This year the Jerry Dove Memorial 5k beat its annual participation record with a total of 155 runners and walkers.
