FAIRMONT, W.Va. (WBOY) — The Mon Valley Habitat for Humanity’s project to build three homes on Robinson Street in Fairmont is underway with plans to wrap up by the end of the year. However, there’s one key piece missing from these future homes: families.

Mon Valley Habitat for Humanity is actively seeking “partner families” to live in these houses once complete. To live in these homes, these partner families will contribute sweat equity, meaning anyone in that family over the age of 18 will contribute at least 125 hours of work to build either their home or their neighbor’s home.

Families can contribute a maximum of 300 hours, and other family members and friends can donate up to 25 hours of their time.

The project is estimated to cost $728,000 with $450,000 of that coming from the Federal Home Loan Bank in collaboration with the affordable housing program. Executive Director of Mon Valley Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Elaine McVay said the nonprofit was responsible for fundraising the rest of the costs, and it’s been able to get labor and materials donated to fulfill the project.

McVay said this is a rolling selection process of families, as they evaluate applications as quickly as possible and will have them involved in the building of their home as soon as possible. The goal is to have these families move in as soon as homes are set to be done in December.

There will be a ceremonial blessing of the construction site on Oct. 6 at 2 p.m. To learn how you can apply to be a partner family, you can go here or call 304-292-0914.
