ELKINS, W.Va. (WBOY) — During his trip to Elkins on Wednesday, West Virginia State Treasurer Riley Moore presented three unclaimed property checks to local law enforcement agencies that totaled more than $35,000.

The checks came from last month’s firearms auction, which Moore holds twice a year. These auctions give various law enforcement agencies throughout the state an opportunity to receive profit from seized firearms. Those with a federal firearms license can then bid on those firearms.

Moore recently announced that September’s Firearms Auction raised more than $176,000 to benefit the 18 law enforcement agencies that participated in it, including the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, the Mountain Region Drug and Crime Task Force and the Elkins Police Department.

“It’s not only that it helps the police departments, a lot of our gun shop owners are the ones that are bidding on these firearms. So, they’re able to get firearms that maybe might need some rehab or fixed up or this or that, or maybe a specialty firearm that they don’t have in inventory and now they’re able to turn that into some dollars. So, it also helps small businesses as well as the police departments in our various communities,” said Moore.

If a police department would like to get involved with Moore’s Firearm Auction you can reach out to the West Virginia State Treasurers Office at 304-558-5000. The next auction will be held in March.
