Harrison County man accused of making $1,000+ in fraudulent purchases on elderly man’s credit card

MOUNT CLARE, W.Va. (WBOY) — A man has been charged after allegedly using an elderly man’s credit card for DoorDash purchases after being allowed to use it for “a job interview” in Harrison County.

On Sept. 20, troopers with the Harrison County detachment of the West Virginia State Police were contacted by an elderly individual who told them that there had been fraudulent use of his credit card, according to a criminal complaint.

When troopers spoke with the victim, they learned that Phillip Poling, 38, of Mount Clare, had obtained the elderly victim’s credit card number which the victim had let Poling use “to buy gasoline and attend a job interview,” troopers said.

Soon after letting Poling use the card, the victim was informed by the credit card provider of fraudulent charges to DoorDash which had Poling’s telephone number listed on the charges, according to the complaint.

Troopers were able to obtain a copy of the victim’s credit card statements, which showed that Poling had made fraudulent charges on the card between November 2023 and March 2024 valuing $1,396.10, troopers said.

Poling has been charged with financial exploitation of the elderly and fraudulent use of an access device. He is being held in the North Central Regional Jail on a $50,000 bond.
