Special election brings independents, others to polls in 139th district

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — Voters in part of the Poconos are picking a new state representative Tuesday.

A special election is underway in the 139th district that covers most of southern Wayne and part of Pike counties.

Voters are filling the vacant seat of Republican Joe Adams who resigned in the middle of his two-year term, Republican Jeff Olsommer faces Democrat Robin Schooley Skibber.

Usually, in primary elections, only voters registered as Democrats or Republicans can submit their ballot, but anyone regardless of their political party can vote in this special election.

“If you are registered as a Democrat or Republican and you live in the 139th District, my understanding is that special election is right on that same page on the back side of the page right? So for them, they’ll have both races right on that same ballot, but for the unaffiliated, or other right voter, they will just receive the special election ballot,” said Wayne County Commissioner and Board of Elections Chair Jocelyn Cramer.

The winner of the special election will serve the remainder of Adams’ term until the end of December.
